What I'll do for my summer vacation

It's finally summer here in the northern hemisphere and as the mercury rises, thoughts naturally turn to lazy days at the beach or forest campsites in the cool of the mountains. Perhaps your vacation involves a long car ride (and a significant hit at the gas pump) to visit with relatives and friends, or a flight to somewhere exciting—Vegas, Disney—or to follow your favorite baseball team chasing dreams of post-season glory.

Whatever your plans, you can be certain that you are not the only one in your organization distracted by the season and preparations for a well-deserved summer getaway.

This is a time of year when guards tend to drop, and attention to detail is less…, well, attentive. Often vacation schedules overlap and those remaining to watch the shop must take up the slack; under such circumstances even the most conscientious of us is stretched beyond the usual, and it's only natural to be tempted to cut corners in an effort to save time.

But you don't need me to remind you not to make that mistake. You are a Certified Information Privacy Professional (or aspiring and diligently studying to be one), and you know that protecting the integrity of your company's or clients' sensitive data is a job demanding constant vigilance.

Plus, you have the Privacy Advisor to help keep you abreast of the latest developments and best practices in privacy. In this month's issue we turn our attention to kids with a timely primer on maintaining compliance with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). Plus, with all new privacy laws now on the books (more than 40 state privacy breach notification laws at last count), we've included a couple of articles on legal and ethical considerations in the face of the changing landscape.

It may not be the lazy, hazy and fun-filled summer of our childhood, but there will still be plenty of time to read. Tuck your copy of the Privacy Advisor in your beach bag, slather on the sunscreen and enjoy. After all, you deserve it.
