When criticism arises, sometimes there is a temptation to bury one's head in the sand. That's what brought one Australian company to its knees, earning the dreaded "Big Brother Award in 2004.

We can all learn a lesson from the story of Veda Advantage, the Australian credit reporting company. The company went from data protection thug to privacy darling in just a few short years. In Veda's case, hiring a CEO who believed in the importance of a strong privacy reputation saved the company from eternal media lashings and raised its profile among peers and consumers.

This month we look at, and learn from, the Veda story.

Also this month we continue our series on healthcare IT and its privacy considerations. Larry Dobrow speaks with physicians, privacy advocates, attorneys and nonprofits to find out how those in the healthcare industry feel about the implementation of commercial personal heath record systems such as GoogleHealth, Microsoft HealthVault and Revolution Health. Is it foolish to bet against the likes of Google and Microsoft? Or will privacy and security concerns surrounding some of our most private information trump the behemoths best intentions?

How do you feel about the commercial availability of medical record keeping systems? Will you use them? Why or why not?
Write to us and let us know. As always, your feedback will shape future issues.
