Russian Data Protection Web site
Officials at the Russian Federal Service for Oversight of Mass Media, Communications and Protection of Cultural Heritage have launched a Web site dedicated to data protection. The site aims to aid compliance with Russia's two-year-old data protection law, The Federal Law of the Russian Federation on Personal Data.
Russia's data protection law is similar in style to those of the European Union. It includes extensive restrictions on the collection, use, storage, transfer and other processing of personal data. It also authorizes businesses to collect, use, store or otherwise process personal data only for the specific purposes set forth in the law or with the individual's written consent. The law imposes detailed requirements on the content and form of the consent and the disclosures that must be provided to the consenting individual.
The law also restricts the transfer of personal data outside of the Russian Federation and includes requirements surrounding data collection and retention.
