Cybercrime investigators are advocating the creation of a national Web interface to link police computers to Internet and e-mail providers across the nation, CNET News reports. A survey scheduled to be released at a federal task force meeting today indicates that 89 percent of law enforcement officials support the exchange of legal process requests and responses through an encrypted, police-only national computer network. However, the plan is raising privacy concerns. "It sounds very dangerous," says Lee Tien, an attorney with the Electronic Frontier Foundation, questioning what law enforcement officials could do with such an interface. "Would they be able to fish through transactional information for anyone? I don't understand how you create a system like this without it."
