Victorian Privacy Commissioner Helen Versey has released guidelines on how to mitigate privacy concerns during emergency situations. In a media release, Versey said sharing people's personal information may help organizations manage an emergency, but procedures must be enacted to protect it from misuse or loss. The Emergencies and Privacy information sheet suggests that public-sector organisations implement staff training and a data policy to aid in the answering of emergency information requests. Versey says most people will allow unconsented disclosure of private information during an emergency, but misuse of such information "may sap public confidence in services that rely on people to cooperate with them readily and quickly when public safety is threatened."
