Following up its report on startup companies focused on privacy protection, The Wall Street Journal has published a Q&A with Eugene Kuznetsov, a former IBM executive and cofounder of the online privacy company Abine. Kuznetsov notes that one of the key opportunities for privacy protection companies is to "alleviate some of the confusion around privacy." A key component of getting people to use such services is trust, he said, which is built in businesses where the consumer is the paying customer. Looking to future issues in privacy protection, Kuznetsov points to the use of e-mail addresses to log into Web sites, noting, "if every one of the hundred sites online that you log into has your one unique e-mail address as the login, they can track you now across sites.
