European Commissioner Neelie Kroes, who is overseeing the drafting of new Internet rules to be proposed this fall, was among those taking part in a debate sponsored by the Interactive Advertising Bureau, The Wall Street Journal reports. When it comes to the practice of online firms collecting user data to better target advertising, she suggested, "We need a user-friendly solution, possibly based on browser settings...Obviously we want to avoid solutions which would have a negative impact on the user experience." She also spoke of the importance of the industry adopting key principles of self-regulation to improve trust among users.
