The European Commission's new rules for Internet user privacy should protect EU citizens no matter which country the data is stored in, said Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding. The Wall Street Journal reports that during a speech in Brussels today, Reding said the commission's proposed rules--expected to be finalized this summer--should provide citizens the "right to be forgotten...When modernizing the legislation, I want to explicitly clarify that people shall have the right--and not only the 'possibility'--to withdraw their consent to data processing," Reding said. She also called for harmonization of EU data protection rules and for the burden of proof that data collection is necessary to rest on data controllers, not Web users.
