OnStar communication service spokesman Vijay Iyer has said the company's recent policy change--to collect location data through its equipment even if the vehicle owner is not an OnStar subscriber--is in anticipation of future services the company may offer, The Wall Street Journal reports. The policy also underscores that the company can share that data--in an anonymized format--with roadside assistance and emergency providers, authorities, credit card processors, data management companies and contracted third-parties for marketing purposes. Iyer said OnStar is working to be transparent about the change, and subscribers can request the two-way connection be shut off upon disabling the service.
