In an attempt to reduce the amount of phishing scams, several e-mail providers and financial organizations, among others, are banding together to create an environment where consumers can feel secure about whether a message is authentic, The Wall Street Journal reports. Companies such as Yahoo, Google, Microsoft, Paypal and Bank of America have joined a group of 15 businesses to form DMARC.org. The goal is to promote technology standards that will help secure e-mails, the report states, and would include digital signatures and policies guiding e-mail providers to detect authentic messages. One representative from the messaging industry said, "If you are a big bank or a retailer, you have a very strong interest in making sure people trust your messages" and added that DMARC "has a lot of promise."
