CNN’s Philippe Coste reports on the increasingly blurred line between the public and private lives of France’s elite class. Privacy laws in the country were generally created not because citizens were concerned about Big Brother, but because the elite class wanted to keep a safe distance from the electorate, Coste writes. Incidents such as accusations against the former director of the International Monetary Fund have allowed the press to “tip-toe around our strict privacy laws and question, for the first time, their cozy gentleman’s agreement with the powerful.
