The European Commission (EC) data protection proposal aims to create a coherent set of rules that would apply to all EU member states, but conflicting ideas about how to protect citizens’ privacy have created obstacles, reports Financial Times. The European Parliament is pushing for stronger protections; the EC would like to soften the proposal to lighten the regulatory burden on businesses, and industry is lobbying to water down the proposal entirely.
