Last week, the European Parliament not only ensured the proposed EU General Data Protection Regulation isn’t going away, it also overwhelmingly voted to call for the immediate suspension of Safe Harbor, something privacy expert Eduardo Ustaran, CIPP/E, said “has sent some powerful shockwaves across the business and legal communities in the EU and beyond.” Though the vote was not entirely unexpected, Ustaran writes, “The big question that remains on the ground is whether EU-based organizations that rely on Safe Harbor as a legal basis for transferring data … are doing the right thing or should be looking for alternatives.” In this Privacy Perspectives post, Ustaran answers that question and provides insight into the rules governing the future of Safe Harbor.
