The Guardian reports privacy advocates claim the Chromium browser, the open source basis for Google’s Chrome, has been remotely installing audio-snooping code capable of listening to users. “Without consent, Google’s code had downloaded a black box of code that—according to itself—had turned on the microphone and was actively listening to your room,” said Rick Falkvinge, founder of the Pirate Party. Google responded that the “hotword module” is only activated if users opt in as part of Chrome’s new “OK, Google” hotword detection. “We’re not listening to your conversations,” said a Google spokeswoman. “Nor do we want to."
