During EPIC’s Champions of Freedom event in Washington, DC, Apple CEO Tim Cook spoke on security and guarding customer privacy and “protecting their right to encryption,” TechCrunch reports. Cook said privacy and security aren’t trade-offs and people have a fundamental right to privacy. “The American people demand it; the constitution demands it; morality demands it,” Cook said. He also discussed consumers’ right to encryption. “Some in Washington are hoping to undermine the ability of ordinary citizens to encrypt their data. We think this is incredibly dangerous,” he said. For companies, he said, “We shouldn’t ask our customers to make a trade-off between privacy and security. We need to offer them the best of both.”
