BBC News reports the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) will receive additional funding “so it can monitor the implications of the controversial new ‘emergency’ data law” entitled the Data Retention and Investigatory Powers Act and known as “DRIP.” The law is already sparking reports of legal challenges. DRIP, which critics have described as being pushed through Parliament to replace a law an EU court determined “interfered with fundamental privacy rights,” requires companies to store customer data for one year. The Home Office said “ministers made clear during the passage of the legislation that extra funding would be provided” for the ICO. Meanwhile, EU Observer reports the EU’s decision to scrap its data retention directive “may have implications for existing international data agreements and EU proposals under review.”
