The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) today named Ashkan Soltani as its new chief technologist. Soltani, who has been an independent security researcher and investigative reporter, is taking over for Latanya Sweeney, who will be returning to Harvard University. “Technology and online and mobile platforms are continuing to evolve at a rapid pace and will remain a key focus for the FTC,” said Chairwoman Edith Ramirez, adding, “I am very grateful to Latanya Sweeney for her outstanding work … particularly for her leadership in strengthening the commission’s efforts to better protect sensitive consumer information.” Soltani will take up his new role in November.
