National Journal reports on the Internet of Things (IoT) and Washington, DC’s scramble to catch up. The Senate Commerce Committee last month discussed what Chairman John Thune (R-SD) called “the most important trend in technology.” For now, it appears to be an issue garnering bipartisan support. “The promise of the Internet of Things must be balanced with real concerns over privacy and the security of our networks,” said Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) at the hearing. Sen. Edward Markey (D-MA) said he’s worried about the potential for cyberattacks via IoT devices like connected cars. However, Thune noted there’s a risk that European-style regulations could squelch innovation should the government overstep. “Let’s tread carefully before we consider stepping in with a ‘government knows best’ mentality that could halt innovation and growth,” he said.
