Evan Selinger and Woodrow Hartzog speak with Federal Trade Commissioner Julie Brill in this interview for Passcode. Brill discusses the concept of “obscurity,” which is a strong component of her vision for protecting consumer privacy, saying, it means “personal information isn’t readily available to just anyone.” She goes on to explain how obscurity currently works within the Fair Credit Reporting Act and talks about the EU’s right to be forgotten and the role of the FTC as a regulator. “I believe Congress should adopt appropriate legislation that would provide consumers with better tools—tools that are robust, intuitive and interactive—to exercise a right of obscurity and should give the FTC the ability to enforce these rights,” Brill says.
