New legislation has unanimously passed the California State Assembly’s Privacy and Consumer Protection Committee that would require consumers to opt in prior to enabling smart TVs’ voice-recognition feature, Broadcasting & Cable reports. Committee Chairman Mike Gatto (D-Glendale) said the proposal also prohibits manufacturers from using recordings for reasons other than for the consumer. “A family’s home is their castle,” he said. “Yet new technologies have breached the walls, and now even a family’s most private moments are at risk from the big data hordes ... AB 1116 will give the consumer the ability to personally determine the level of privacy protections inside their home.”
