The world’s biggest social network wants to patent a system to let children under the age of 13 create accounts—with parental consent and supervision, Politico reports. According to a patent application made public on Thursday, Facebook would seek to allow children onto its site, first by getting parental consent via the parent’s Facebook account. The parents would then set the privacy controls for their child, limiting and monitoring the available content, friends and third-party applications. A Facebook spokesman said the patent was first filed in 2012 and is “not a predictor of future work in this area,” adding, “Child safety advocates, policymakers and companies have discussed how best to help parents keep their kids safe online. Like any responsible company, we looked at ways to tackle this issue.”
