A report released by Citizen Lab has found the Canadian government guilty of various privacy missteps, such as a lack of transparency in the handling of Canadian phone records. Christopher Parsons, the report’s author, describes Canada as “absolutely behind” on surveillance transparency and accountability, CBC News reports. Discoveries such as “millions” of user records being demanded by law enforcement, data from said records being sold to third parties and a lack of accountability on tracking how this data was actually used were seen as particularly troubling. “It raises real questions about the appropriateness of the powers or perhaps the appropriateness of the mandates or aggressiveness of the agencies that currently look to keep Canadians safe," Parsons said.
