In a blog post, nNovation Partner Shaun Brown discusses the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) announcement of its first Notice of Violation under Canada’s Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL), including a $1.1 million penalty. “The company on the receiving end of the notice is Compu-Finder,” Brown writes. The CRTC’s notice alleges the company sent commercial electronic messages without consent and unsubscribe mechanisms did not work in all messages. “It may be a bit of a surprise that the first publicized penalty is over a million dollars,” Brown writes, adding, “That is significant. However, there are a few things about this notice that are as expected”—such as evidence of multiple CASL violations.
