Steven Keating, a doctoral student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Lab, is “a passionate advocate for giving patients all the medical data they ask for,” The New York Times reports, and for good reason: Requesting his own data and monitoring his condition and symptoms after a brain scan revealed a “slight abnormality.” He is now the survivor of brain cancer. However, many healthcare providers are “resistant to sharing data, owing to tradition, business practices and legal concerns,” the report states, noting Keating “is a strong believer in privacy, but he personally believes that the benefits outweigh the risks—and whether to share data or not should be an individual’s choice and an individual responsibility.” (Registration may be required to access this story.)
