Science fiction author and biologist Peter Watts wasn’t sure what to make of his invitation to speak at the IAPP’s Canada Privacy Symposium last month. However, with a much-publicized incident with U.S. border police under his belt, Watts has made surveillance and data privacy something of a hobby.

Enough so that his suggestion to the IAPP audience that they not offer simply data protection, but guaranteed data destruction in the face of government surveillance requests (“burn the data to the ground”), has resonated strongly with our readership.

Since that above-linked story summarizing his keynote address, titled “The Scorched-Earth Society: A Suicide Bomber’s Guide to Online Privacy,” has become our most-read story of the past six months, perhaps it’s a good idea that we offer up the video.

Here is his address, in full:

And, if you’re curious, here’s Watts’ own summation of how the day went for him (FYI: some of the language is NSFW): “And yet, all things considered, it went over way better than any sane person might have predicted.” You can also find the transcript of his talk and reproductions of his slides here.
