The European Commission (EC) says it wants to have a single cross-continent data protection law in place by the end of the year, claiming it will bring major benefits to consumers and businesses, V3.co.uk reports. EC Vice President Andrus Ansip and Commissioner Věra Jourová said in a joint statement that the reforms should become law by the end of 2015. Meanwhile, Irish data researchers are proposing a European Union magna carta for data that would create a new policy and legislative framework for data ethics and use. The researchers will meet next week in Brussels. Meanwhile, SC Magazine reports on info-security teams being unprepared for incoming EU data protection laws, and the Joint Research Centre, the EC’s in-house science service, has created a round-table debate focusing on digital privacy in relation to citizens` rights.
