European Data Protection Supervisor Peter Hustinx has called on the EU’s member states to push forward with the overhaul of data protection laws by year’s end in the name of restoring public trust in the Internet, The New York Times reports. Hustinx also called on U.S. President Barack Obama to keep his word on reviewing American privacy rules. Meanwhile, Hustinx recently issued an opinion on the potential for EU scrutiny of companies’ gathering and use of personal data for free services and whether such practices are compliant with EU law on competition; he’s called for DPAs to work together to “help stimulate the market for privacy-enhancing services.” (Registration may be required to access this story.)
