Battlegrounds are emerging in the struggle to balance protecting children’s privacy with the potential benefits of student data for improving educational opportunities. In this post for Privacy Perspectives, Allen Brandt, CIPP/US, CIPP/E, CIPM, considers the recent meeting of two House of Representatives subcommittees on “How Data Mining Threatens Student Privacy” as well as reports indicating “as many as 10 million unique data points on each child, each day” are being collected. With the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act now 40 years old, a 2008 update “silent on many of the data points that are currently being collected” and states moving forward with their own laws, Brandt muses that “the fastest and perhaps easiest-to-implement changes could come from industry itself.”
