The Wall Street Journal reports on an internal document prepared by senior officials for EU Digital Commissioner Günther Oettinger that proposes the creation of a “powerful new regulator to oversee a swath of mainly U.S.-based Internet companies.” The document is described as a “blueprint for the regulation of online networks in Europe that goes far beyond a general plan for the region’s digital sector that is due to be announced next month,” the WSJ report states. However, the plan would still need to be converted in European Commission proposals and approved by the national governments as well as the European Parliament. A spokesperson for Oettinger said he requested the blueprint “to look into the possibilities,” but that no decision has yet been made. According to Irish Fine Gael MEP Brian Hayes, the EU should not use its digital single market proposal to target U.S. technology companies for “political means.” (Registration may be required to access this story.)
