The three major institutions charged with creating the next generation of EU data protection law started discussions Wednesday in the first of a series of trilogue meetings to finalize the proposed General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and several EU countries are reportedly concerned about the GDPR, including Cyprus, Italy, Belgium and Poland. Austria said it will not support a law that lowers data protection from existing standards. “Facing bumps ahead, negotiators said they were still committed to wrapping up the legislation package this year,” EurActiv reports, noting, “Eight more meetings are planned until October, when the three EU lawmaking bodies said they expected to agree on a general text.”
