In a post for EBN, Newark element14 Global Solutions Development Manager Cliff Ortmeyer discusses the future of the Internet of Things (IoT) and, for it to succeed, the need for engineers to build privacy protections into technology. He notes that “most engineers are still wrapped up in the basic infrastructure of IoT” and that, “As a result, more abstract ideas such as personal privacy can quickly fall by the wayside.” With data collection capabilities growing exponentially under the IoT regime, data becomes more difficult to control, Ortmeyer notes, and data security becomes more complex. “While there are already multiple security standards currently being developed to address this concern, it is the designers and engineers that will need to find a way to implement these standards without damaging the end-user experience,” he writes.
