During a press conference on the cookie rules, which are going to enter into force by June 3, Italian Data Protection Authority (Garante) President Antonello Soro made an important announcement.

On one hand, with reference to cookies, Soro said that Italy has granted a longer period of time to the market—compared to other EU countries—before requiring them to align their websites to EU and national rules on cookies.

The final term to adopt measures set forth by the Garante by means of its general resolution of May 8, 2014, is going to expire in less than one month, and each data controller having its own website is required to inform users about nature and purposes of cookies.

The sanction for noncompliance can reach the maximum level of 480,000 euros.
