The New York Times reports on India’s Centralized Monitoring System—its new surveillance program—and whether citizens can trust that the government will not infringe on their privacy. The government has said it will abide by laws mandating that it receive proper authorization prior to intercepting communications and that privacy will be better protected. “But there are a host of reasons why the citizens of India should be skeptical of those official claims,” the report states.
