We here at the IAPP and Cloud Security Alliance (CSA) are always looking to improve our events right up to the last moment, and this year’s IAPP Privacy Academy and CSA Congress is no exception, with two new keynoters joining the roster recently.

First is Julie Hanna, executive chair of the board at Kiva, which bills itself as “the world’s largest crowdfunding marketplace for social good.” Their tagline is “loans that change lives.” Money is lent every 10 seconds through the web portal, with money going to people in developing countries for everything from fish to hybrid potato seeds to construction materials for a new barn to tuition and graduation costs.

And, so far, 98.77 percent of that money, some $600 million, has been repaid.

She has also been vital in starting up firms like Healtheon (what is now WebMD) and Portola (which became Netscape Mail).

Let’s just say her firms have handled a lot of personal data. How has she navigated the ethical and moral minefield that many of these start-ups presented in regard to leveraging personal data to create revenue? How do start-ups now take advantage of the data revolution to grow and thrive without stepping on the backs of their customers?

She’ll explore the answers to these questions and more in her address on Friday.

Another new voice to the IAPP community is Paul Milkman, senior VP, technology risk management and information security for the TD Bank Group. In doing global work evaluating technology risk, Milkman must make tough decisions on cloud contracting, info-security, privacy and a host of other necessities for the organization’s smooth operation.

It’s something he’s been doing for 25 years, whether as global information security officer at Xerox or VP for information security at Fannie Mae or in leading the financial sector and insurance consulting unit at IBM.

Banks are often caught in the crossfire during privacy breaches, whether protecting against their own incidents or helping to manage the fallout when retailers suffer hacks and credit and debit cards need to be reissued.

Milkman will discuss hinking strategically about protecting and securing personal information, wherever you are in the world.
