The Christian Science Monitor’s Passcode reports on the debates surrounding the regulation of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). One month after releasing its long-awaited proposal for UAV regulation, the agency has been sued by privacy advocates, notably the Electronic Privacy Information Center. Others, however, do not think the FAA should regulate UAVs. The agency, too, noted in a privacy impact assessment that while it “acknowledges that privacy concerns have been raised about (UAV) operations … these issues are beyond the scope of this rulemaking.” Meanwhile, in comments submitted to the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, two journalism trade groups expressed their concern that privacy practices could restrict their newsgathering activities.
