Are HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules Strong Enough?
The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) surveyed more than 500 health IT professionals in May to find out whether they feel HIPAA privacy and security rules are strong enough. The results? Fifty-four percent said they believe the rules are strong enough, while 34 percent of respondents said they believe they were not strong enough.

Other findings include:

  • 33.3 percent of respondents believe that recent publicity around patient data breaches will slow the adoption of electronic health records (EHRs); 39 percent believe the breach publicity will not impact EHR adoption; 13 percent believe it will increase EHR adoption;
  • 44 percent of respondents believe that paper-based medical information is most susceptible to a security breach; 37 percent believe the medical information stored in portable electronic devices is most susceptible; 15 percent feel information stored online is most vulnerable.
