U.S. Magistrate Judge Laurel Beeler has ruled that a lawsuit claiming Hulu violated the Video Privacy Protection Act will continue, but her decision was mixed, reports MediaPost. The case involves Hulu’s sharing of user data with comScore and Facebook. While plaintiffs said that comScore could decipher users’ identities from the information Hulu provided, Beeler sided with Hulu, saying there was no proof comScore ever “correlated any information” between the IDs and users' names. However, in the Facebook argument, Beeler ruled that Hulu was potentially liable, depending on whether it knew what data it was sending to Facebook. For about two years, Facebook’s “Like” button was transmitting the titles of videos people watched along with cookies indicating users’ Facebook IDs to its server, whether or not users clicked the “Like” button.
