The Law Council has said a bill to “increase the powers of the immigration department to collect biometric identifiers” should not be passed without an assessment by the privacy commissioner, Computerworld reports. Appearing before a Senate inquiry into the Migration Amendment (Strengthening Biometrics Integrity) Bill 2015, Law Council Privacy Law Committee Chair Olga Ganopolsky noted, “This has the potential to impact on the travel and privacy of citizens who might not be suspected of contravening any Australian law or pose a risk to national security.” Meanwhile, The Australian reports on comments by delegates at a recent Internet governance and digital privacy conferences describing Australia’s privacy policies as “extreme” and “out of touch.”
