The National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL) is calling for more oversight over a U.S. Postal Service program that photographs the front and back of every letter sent through its physical mail system, Fast Company reports. Run by the Postal Inspection Service, the program lets state and federal law enforcement request “mail cover,” which gives them access to address information from letters and packages sent between criminal suspects. According to the report, courts have not found such a program to be in violation of the Fourth Amendment, but the NACDL still thinks it’s a privacy concern.
