The New York Times profiles Jay Edelson and his law firm’s work suing technology companies by claiming privacy violations, usually of older laws including the Video Privacy Protection Act and the Telephone Consumer Protection Act. Edelson is, “if not the most hated person in Silicon Valley, very close to it,” the report states. Edelson PC has sued tech companies large and small, and its most recent action is a case against Facebook for allegedly amassing the “world’s largest privately held database of consumer biometrics data.” Edelson said, “When we go after a dozen big companies and win … the trickle-down effect is so much larger than if it’s perceived as a one-off suit.” Critics, however, say class-action attorneys make millions while those affected get next to nothing.
