Deutsche Welle reports that Justice Minister Heiko Maas announced new guidelines for data retention in Germany with “very strict limits,” which appear to settle a debate between Maas and Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere. However, EurActiv reports opponents believe the proposal to reintroduce data retention “is simply a scheme to ‘relabel’ existing legislation.” The proposal, submitted on Wednesday, limits the retention of Internet and telephone data to 10 weeks and location data to four weeks. “This would be a maximum retention period, requiring collected data to be erased after expiration. If the provider fails to comply with the deletion requirement, the provision would penalise it with a fine,” the report states.
