In an interview with Health Data Management, the new chief privacy officer for the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT, Lucia Savage, discusses her office’s goals. Telemedicine, unregulated mobile health and “complex” state laws are on her agenda. “It’s a complicated analysis in privacy because of variances in state law,” Savage said, pointing to issues that arise when patients cross state borders for medical care. “We need to sort that out,” she said. Savage is focusing on looking ahead at where technology is going. “My job is to move interoperability forward with the rules we actually have, and it is up to the public and their legislators to decide if those are the right rules,” she said.
