I once asked Frank Work, in front of a few hundred people, whether he wore boxers or briefs. Were you in the audience to hear his response? ‘Cause I'm not telling. Frank, of course, was the privacy commissioner in Alberta who oversaw the implementation of the private-sector law in that province, all the while keeping a watchful on eye on the public-sector stuff, too.

Whether or not you were there to see my lame attempt to try and embarrass him, you’ll want to be at the next event where Frank is centre stage, because you are sure to be entertained and educated by one of Canada’s true leaders in the privacy field.

I asked Frank if he would deliver a keynote speech at this year’s IAPP Canada Privacy Symposium and I'm thrilled he agreed. I think he said something like, “I hope it’s okay if my remarks rattle people a bit." In response, I encouraged him to “bring it on."

If you haven't already registered for the Symposium, where you'll hear from Frank and many other engaging speakers, I encourage you to.

On a different note, I was at a conference this week organized primarily for the insurance industry. Privacy and insurance ... a marriage that was inevitable, right? I think from my experience dealing with the American situation, Canada feels a little behind the game on these issues, but I was at least encouraged by the fact that so many insurance pros are turning their minds to the privacy issues facing us. In fact, one of them approached me to say she was psyched to be taking her CIPP/C training at the upcoming Symposium. A good sign indeed. This insurance pro/privacy pro will not only hopefully get her credentials at the Symposium, but she’ll also get to hear Frank Work.  Now there’s bang for your buck.
