Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD), top democrat on the House Oversight Committee, reported at a hearing that the number of federal employees affected by a breach of background investigation service USIS is now believed to be more than 27,000, reports The Hill. “The actual number of individuals affected by the USIS data breach is still not yet known, but (government) experts believe that the personal information of many more federal employees may have been compromised,” Cummings said. Cummings also indicated that USIS and its parent company Altegrity weren’t fully cooperative with the investigation, and Government Accountability Office Director of Information Security Issues Gregory Wilshusen implored federal agencies to do more to protect themselves.
