An Organization of American States (OAS) committee has adopted a report on personal data protection. Rapporteur David Stewart prepared the report for access to public information and personal data protection. In June 2014, the OAS General Assembly requested such a report to put forth proposals on the various ways personal data protection could be regulated. The report was presented to the OAS Permanent Council last month and was informed by a range of experts from the governmental, academic, business and nongovernmental fields. After several consultations, Stewart concluded that the “most productive option would be to prepare proposed legislative guidelines … rather than an agreement on the exact details of the wording of a specific law,” the report states.
