In a report tabled in Parliament this week, Interim Privacy Commissioner Chantal Bernier has found the government failed to “follow its own policies to protect sensitive data of more than 583,000 student loan recipients,” CBC News reports. The incident involved the loss of a hard drive that was not password-protected or encrypted, and, according to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner’s report, employees were unaware of the sensitive nature of the data on that drive. "Protecting personal information cannot be ensured by having policies on paper,” Bernier said in the report. “Policies must be put into practice each and every day and monitored regularly.”
