The now-bankrupt consumer electronics chain RadioShack is auctioning off its trademarks, logos, leases and, most alarmingly, its trove of consumer personal information, including names, email addresses and phone numbers of as many as 100 million individuals, Bloomberg Business reports. The company included the personal details as part of its asset class. Hilco Steambank, which is serving as an intermediary for RadioShack, said the bankruptcy court might not approve the deal, and two legal filings have already been submitted challenging the sale. Texas Attorney General (AG) Ken Paxton has also challenged the deal, noting that a sign at RadioShack stores reads, “We pride ourselves on not selling our private mailing list.” Paxton’s predecessor, Greg Abbott had a similar objection when True.com was in bankruptcy and the FTC filed suit to prevent a similar sale of data assets in the Toysmart.com case. Tennessee’s AG has also objected to the sale.
