ZD Net reports on Google’s most recent transparency report, which indicates the number of requests from the government for users’ information has increased fivefold since it first began reporting such requests in 2009. For the six months ending on December 31, 2013, the number of requests for user information for criminal investigations “was up to 780 requests relating to 944 accounts … from 645 requests for 807 accounts in the previous six-month period,” the report states. Based on those numbers, Australia comes in “well above the average for the increase in government requests,” the report states, noting Google has reported “a 120-percent increase in requests to Google from governments across the globe since 2009.”
