The U.S. Chamber of Commerce (USCC) has released its new report, Business Without Borders: The Importance of Cross-Border Data Transfers to Global Prosperity. Hunton & Williams privacy experts wrote the report in collaboration with the USCC. The report, which offers solutions for developing international mechanisms to protect privacy and facilitate data flows, includes such recommendations as moving “away from rigid one-size-fits-all regulations toward more outcome-focused regimes” and “implementing strong, binding trade agreement commitments that prohibit data localization requirements, support unimpeded data flows and encourage interoperability among privacy regimes,” according to a media release. “Many of the cross-border data transfer restrictions currently in place were established prior to the digital revolution,” said Hunton & Williams’ Lisa Sotto, CIPP/US, CIPM. “The laws were not crafted to address the ways in which businesses and consumers use data today.”
