The Wall Street Journal reports on software that aims to understand what people posting on social media outlets actually mean in an attempt to help with marketing efforts. The software breaks down tweets and status updates to decipher a message’s literal meaning, then uses “sentiment analysis” to determine the mood of each post; i.e., was the poster being sarcastic, enthusiastic? Such analysis aims to determine what people really want in products. Meanwhile, an MIT researcher has developed software on which to build web services that keep data encrypted on servers at all times. (Registration may be required to access this story.)
